Obsidian is a nice note taking tool. I’ve tried using it probably around July 2025, but only started using it more later on.
I also use SyncThing to sync my vault between my PC and phone for free.
I tried using Notion previously for a similar purpose but I didn’t like how it was all cloud web based with AI shoved in where I didn’t want it. Obsidian is nice, as everything is made up of local Markdown files, meaning you have full control of all of the data. Using markdown is also nice in itself as it’s a common and standard way of formatting text documents. Even without a proper markdown viewer, it’s still easy to read and interpret the raw text file. This means that if I ever want to move away from Obsidian, all of my notes will remain in an easily accessible format that other software can access without losing any information. It also allows using Obsidian vaults with additional tools, like I’m using with Quartz to host this website.
Plugins I like
- Auto Folder Collapse - Stops the folder view being really messy, allowing you to auto-collapse any folders you’re not looking inside (kinda how I configured this website’s file explorer to work)
- Calendar - A calendar view for daily notes.
- Homepage - Have a centralised homepage that auto-opens.
- Iconize - Icons for your files and folders.
